Terms of Service

Last updated: March 2026  ·  Effective date: March 2026  ·  Jurisdiction: United States

These Terms of Service govern your use of civic-nexus.net and all tools, content, and services provided by Civic Nexus. By accessing or using the site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

1. About Civic Nexus

Civic Nexus is an independent educational platform operated by a solo founder based in the United States. It provides political research tools, alignment tests, and data-driven civic insight resources. Civic Nexus is not affiliated with any political party, government body, campaign, or advocacy organisation. All tools are designed to be nonpartisan and educational in nature.

Civic Nexus is not a registered legal entity. These Terms constitute an agreement between you and the individual operating Civic Nexus.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Civic Nexus. If you are under 18, you should review these Terms with a parent or guardian. By using the site, you represent that you meet this age requirement.

You may use Civic Nexus from anywhere in the world, subject to your local laws. You are responsible for ensuring your use of the site complies with the laws of your jurisdiction.

3. The Tools and Services

Civic Nexus currently provides the following tools and features:

All tools are provided free of charge. No feature of the site is paywalled. Donations are accepted voluntarily to support hosting and development costs but confer no special access or privileges.

4. User Accounts

Creating an account is optional. You may take tests and submit results anonymously without registering. If you choose to register:

Civic Nexus reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

5. Research Submissions

When you submit test or survey results to the Civic Nexus research dataset, you grant Civic Nexus a non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free licence to use, store, and publish that data in anonymised aggregate form for research and educational purposes.

If submitted while logged in, results are linked to your account internally but are never published with any identifying information. If submitted anonymously, results are stored without any user identifier. Civic Nexus does not attempt to re-identify anonymous submissions.

You may delete submitted results at any time through your account dashboard. Deletion removes your results from the live dataset. Results already included in published research papers or reports cannot be retroactively removed from those publications, but will be excluded from all future datasets and exports.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

Civic Nexus rate-limits API requests to prevent abuse. Circumventing these limits is a violation of these Terms.

7. Intellectual Property

All original content on Civic Nexus — including the test questions, scoring methodology, research papers, written explanations, and site design — is the intellectual property of Civic Nexus and may not be reproduced, distributed, or used commercially without explicit written permission.

The underlying source code for the frontend is published in a public GitHub repository under the AGPL-3.0 licence. Use of that code is governed by that licence. The research methodology, question sets, and official position scores are not covered by the open-source licence and remain proprietary.

You retain ownership of any information you voluntarily submit (such as demographic data alongside test results). By submitting it, you grant the licence described in Section 5.

8. Disclaimers

Civic Nexus tools are provided for educational and informational purposes only. Results are not political advice, voting guidance, or an endorsement of any candidate, party, or policy position.

Test and survey results are inherently simplified approximations of complex ideological and policy positions. They should not be treated as definitive or authoritative characterisations of any individual's political identity.

Official position scores assigned to elected representatives are estimates based on publicly available information and are subject to error. They do not constitute endorsement or criticism of any official.

The site is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. Civic Nexus makes no guarantee of uptime, accuracy, or fitness for any particular purpose.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Civic Nexus and its operator shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the site, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

Civic Nexus's total liability to you for any claim arising from use of the site shall not exceed the amount you have paid to Civic Nexus in the twelve months preceding the claim — which, given all services are free, is zero.

10. Third-Party Services

Civic Nexus uses the following third-party services in its operation:

Civic Nexus is not responsible for the practices of these third-party providers. Links to their terms and privacy policies are available on their respective websites.

11. Changes to These Terms

Civic Nexus may update these Terms from time to time. When changes are made, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be revised. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

For material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify registered users — for example, by displaying a notice on the site.

12. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States. Any disputes arising from use of the site shall be resolved under applicable United States federal or state law. Civic Nexus makes no representation that the site is appropriate or available for use outside the United States, though it is accessible globally.
